A Familiar Looking Freshman

Lisa Jack needed a charismatic person to shoot as she was studying Photography at Occidental College and soon got hooked up with "Barry" or as he is now known Barack. These pictures are so cool and again, you don't have to be a fan of his but come on.....
Could you imagine Clinton or Bush ever looking this cool? Didn't think so.

Concerts in LA

Even though these are some pretty terrible pictures it doesn't mean that the shows were bad. In fact, these were some of my favorite shows since having lived here in LA. Lissy Trullie opened up for The Virgins and I thought they should have been the closer cuz they sounded great and their cover of Hot Chip's "Ready for the Floor," was genius. The Walkmen are rock stars and Ed Sharpe and co. are well on their way to stardom.

Aspen, Colorado

Some people go to Aspen for the skiing or to be around really wealthy people or maybe all of the above but I go for a couple of different reasons. The first being that I have family there so it's always great to see them and secondly is the food and drinks. No, I am not talking about the Aspen Club or some swank joint but a simple coffee shop and a bar/restaurant that has insanely good mexican food.
First, Ink Coffee is the best coffee shop in the world. I have put this place to the test and they always win. The drink to get is a blended black and white which is a couple shots of espresso combined with dark chocolate and white chocolate. It's unreal.

My nephew Edward drinking a blended orange juice

Next, is Woody Creek Tavern, which is somewhat of a landmark in Aspen because Hunter S. Thompson would go there everyday and booze up. However, I love this place because it's on the opposite side of town and the food and drinks are simple but really good. I took some pictures of posters from the wall.

Arthur Kade

Am I late to the party on this one? Arthur Kade was a financier who quit that world to model and act......while living in Philly. He has a blog where he shares his stories about how talented and good looking he is and his "journey" onto becoming famous because he has the complete package of looks, personality, and talent. I completely agree, and if you don't believe me just look at that picture. He looks like Sly Stallone modeling in Rocky 5.  He even has his own scale of how he rates girls and their hotness. For the first time in my life I think I am speechless.

"When I walk in a room, I usually catch people trying to figure out who I am because of how I look and half the room turned to try and figure it out at the restaurant."

Brutus Magazine

I stumbled upon this magazine after I saw pics from one of my favorite sites Ready 4 the House. They did a profile on his house as well. Check that out HERE. After I bought the magazine I was excited to see my buddy Larry made the site with pictures from his new pad. Obviously, the man has got insanely good taste. I am looking forward to checkin out his pad in person. More pics to come....hopefully.
The magazine itself seems pretty cool even though it's in Japanese and I can't read anything but they profiled some cool people based in LA who live in Silverlake.

I want that bike

Musical Genius - Harry Nilsson

Harry Nilsson was a New York born Swede that ranks upon my top 10 of singer-songwriters of all time. Some may know him for his relentless partying or for being best friends with Lennon, Ringo, Cass Elliot, or anyo other iconic musician from the 60's. One of my favorite stories is when Paul and John were at a press conference in New York and John was asked who is favorite artist was he replied, "Nilsson." They then asked Paul and he said,"Nilsson." Also noteworthy was the fact that Keith Moon and Cass Elliot both died at his flat in London. More importantly are Nilsson's songs though that stand the test of time. Whether it be "Everybody's talking," "One," Best Friend," these songs are so incredibly good.
Jason Schwartzman named his dog after a Nilsson song so that's the stamp of approval.

A documentary came out in 2006 about Nilsson so check it out HERE

Musso & Frank

When dining out in Los Angeles, most may think of the high end sushi joints that cost an arm, a leg, and maybe your mid torso, or club/restaurants that have good food but you have to sit next to the worst people on earth. Either way it is not a good situation. Have no fear my friends, I have a place that is the antithesis of that but also represents everything that is great about Hollywood. Insert: Musso & Frank. It's been around since 1919 and the decor hasn't changed since the 50's I would say. Our waiter who served us last night was named Manuel and he had been working there for 38 years. How cool is that? Our cook had been there since '84. Manuel was probably in his mid 70's and was so content talking about his time at Musso's and it was really refreshing because most of the waiters here are 19 and are trying to be the next Tom Cruise. I don't think Manuel has any plans on acting but I can tell you he has served everyone from McQueen to Brad Pitt so I'm sure he has some great stories.

LA is OK - Point # 2

Cinespia is another reason why LA is especially a good place to be. They screen movies outdoor every weekend of the summer. They screen them at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. They are screening Cool Hand Luke" to kick off their summer and it also happens to be one of my favorite movies. Sadly, I will be out of town but will be sure to catch next weekend's Dazed and Confused aka Matthew McConaughey's only good film.

NBC News Anchor an Indie Hipster?

Brian Williams who is commonly known as the stern looking news anchor for NBC has a prfound love of music which is why he started a musical series called "Britunes," which he claims he didn't name (let's hope not). But, the point is, you won't see the Doucey Brothers or Hannah Craptana on the show. His first guest is Deer Tick, who just so happens to be touring with a band that I just wrote about
Brian raves about this indie band and seems to be quite knowledgeable on indie music in general. This was the first show for the new show and I say job well done. I truly hope that other news anchors don't get any ideas as i can only imagine what Hardball's Chris Matthews listens to.

L.A. is OK - Point #1

I'm going to start doing a weekly (if I'm not too lazy) posting of some of the main reasons why I enjoy living in southern California. No, it's got nothing to do with surfing, seeing Brody from the Hills at a bar randomly (Ty Cooper's best friend), or going to a fancy restaurant that i can't pronounce. My favorite places are usually the hole in the walls that I can actually afford. With that being said, my first post is in honor of the best mexican in Los Angeles : Cactus Taqueria. I usually go with a carne asada burrito and a Coke, which costs about 5 bucks. it's so good and it's about 4 blocks from my office so I walk here at least once a week. Please trust me on this one.
Even more proof that cactus is the best. Just look at their sign......

Top 5 Unsigned/Under the Radar Bands

Here is my Top 5 (in no special order) for my favorite groups that are either signed or haven't quite gotten to Rockstar status...yet. I don't really care to try and describe these bands as I am not a professional music critic but I do think all these bands are really talented from The Americans having the Dap Kings play on their record to Dawes having toured with Ben Lee, Jenny Lewis and some other really good artists. Test these out for yourselves and let me know what cha think.
It just so happens to be an East Meets West sorta thing. Thanks to ACL for telling about US Royalty by the way...

Enjoy.......
